So we added OSL (Open Shading Language) to 3ds Max

In 3ds Max 2019 we decided to throw in OSL, the Open Shading Language.

Before typing too much about it, here's the introductory YouTube video describing what it is:


OSL in 3ds Max allows you to use most (tho not all - there are some limitations) OSL shaders natively in 3ds Max. It works in:

  • Any renderer supporting the classic 3ds max shader API, like Scanline, vRay, Corona, etc.
  • Any renderer that natively support OSL (such as Arnold) can run the shaders directly
This blog will be full of information about this stuff, how to write your own shaders, and other fun stuff.
